a Sewing Room!
Setting up a sewing room is seriously distracting! Like, I'm sitting here tonight thinking... there's something I really should be doing. What is it, what is it.... oh, my post!
Yep, I'm ready to share! It's totally not decorated and there's still some clutter about, but it's functional. And I. Am. Happy! On Sunday we picked up the furniture from Ikea and last night Brandon finished setting things up. Today I moved everything..
starting with the Kona.
Of course, moving the fabric is the most fun. I think this Billy bookshelf with wood/glass doors is really perfect for the fabric. It's in a shady place, so fading won't be a problem and I can SEE it without it being exposed to dust. My fabric has always been down at knee level. It's so lovely to look at it this way. Until I moved it over I felt halfway between the two spaces (old and new), but with the fabric in place I think I finally settled in. I'm still nervous about the lighting and such, but I'm really thankful to have everything in one place!
So, dragging ourselves away from the fabric, this big window is where the design wall will live someday. The design wall and fancy diffused lighting are projects that Brandon is supposed to get to after putting up 1800 feet of fence (so we can have a cow) and after doing a little cabinet remodel in his workshop So, yeah, not so soon. But, someday.
In that back corner is this drawer system that Brandon built for me last year. It houses my scraps, flat things (like random rulers) and works in progress that can peak out of that top shelf, reminding me that they exist.
Because I gained some new storage space, I was able to pull my binding strips, ribbons and trimming bits and bobs out of the dark corner where they were buried to this new drawer. Score!
Did you notice the rug yet? Yes, it's kind of crazy. It hasn't had a place to be for years and years, but I like it here. I'm using it to hide the power cord from my sewing machine (sitting on table in middle of room) to an outlet behind the drawer system. Also, turns out it's a kitty magnet. This could be a VERY good thing. Perhaps they'll leave all my sewn surfaces alone? One can dream. Also, I figured it'll hide all the fabric dust and threads that accumulate by the ironing board. I'll just shake the rug outside from time to time.
Ok, so looking this-a-way you can see my sewing machine sitting at the corner of two Ikea Vika tables. Brandon bolted two long tables together so I have a 78"x 46" workspace. I decided against two tables because I've been cutting happily on a low table for quite some time. It's probably because I'm on the short side. Anyways, I didn't want to crowd the room by having two tables and I do love having a HUGE work surface for cutting large pieces of fabric.
Notice how one of the legs of the Ikea table is a drawer system? Ikea tables are very customizable like that.
I replaced my old clear plastic thread boxes (which are breaking apart from falls on my hard floors) with...
A drawer. Maybe a little boring, but really functional. This dust-free storage works fine with different-sized spools and keeps them right at my finger tips when sewing. I had already been using old mint tins for my bobbins. Works.
Equally excited about this drawer, so my marking tools and labels are easy to reach. I say drawers by a sewing station are really handy! Yeah, you probably knew that. But still, I'm glad I sprung for the drawers-as-leg thing.
Well, I guess that's all for now! I'll have you back for a look-see when I've decorated. I can tell you that this is going to make it that much harder for me to ever, ever want to leave home.
