Whimsy Plus covered journal

Last night I was fully craving some good, casual patchwork.  Just something to mess around with.  Something from scrap.

inspired by this bouquet!

I could feel it, I needed to just sew.  And I'd been plotting (come on, you do it too).  On my drive home I'd zeroed in on a magenta and citron color scheme with lots of neutrals.  That vision has been in my head since I picked up this bouquet for a Handstitched class photo shoot.

Whimsy Plus journal cover

At first I thought I'd make precise little pluses, but there are a number of reasons why that was doomed.  Reason no. 1:  I wasn't making them right.  The proportions aren't even, like in a traditional plus quilt.  I figured that out after I'd done all the cutting...  Reason no. 2:  I didn't want to use pins.  Like none.  Neither did I plan to trim to perfection.  Reason no. 3:  I did some of this sewing semi-blind without my contacts rather far past my bedtime.  Um what?

I heart scraps.

Anyhoo, by the time I was sewing semi-blind I'd already embraced the, let's say, "whimsical" nature of those pluses.  And in the light of morning (contacts firmly in place) I decided that the whimsy brought on by slightly askew seams only made the work more endearing.  At least it does to me.

citron & magenta

Most of this journal cover developed from scrap, with the addition of a large piece of Kumari Gardens Tarika in moss (that saucy citron print).  I am most pleased.

Let's see, this is Friday.  So, that means I'm off to choose a winner for the JAQ's Fabrics giveaway.  I always notify winners by email, rather than posting a separate post about it, by the way.  Don't worry, I always reach them!

Oh, and I want to tell you about something happening Next Weekend.  Next weekend is a glorious, long-anticipated weekend.  I'm taking a very small, intimate sewing retreat with some bloggy friends in a house we've rented in Atlanta.  I'm hoping to actually, well, sew there.  That and meet in person some folks for the first time who are already old friends.  I tell you because... if you're local you can join the fun by meeting up with us at Whipstitch on Saturday morning, June 23rd.  We'll get there soon after opening (which is 10 am) on Saturday, shop and then have lunch next door at a cool, natural eatery. Everyone gets 10% off that morning shopping in-store at Whipstitch, so this is obviously the right time for you to check off that wish list.  Would love to see you then!  And, for everyone else, I promise to come back from Whipstitch with delicious pictures!

Alrighty then.  Everyone have a great weekend!
