Drummer Boy Dresdens: Week 5
Here’s the official tipping point. We’re launching into week five of our nine-week sew-along. If you’re keeping pace, you are now more than halfway done! I don’t know if that’s really a good thing though, as this project is so much fun. I can see why @theMakingsofJoy was game to make a second version so soon after completing her first!
Don’t forget to follow our weekly sponsor to make sure you’re eligible for the prize. I draw a random picture each week tagged with #DrummerBoyDresdens to choose the lucky winner.
This week the prize is gifted by @FencelineFabrics. Check out their Instagram loveliness!

Week 5 Goal
25 Dresden Fans
It’s time for another batch of those dresden fans. This week, create 25 more lovely fans. By week-end, your total count will be 75 of 100. We’re almost there! If need be, reference the how to’s in our Week 1 post to refresh your memory or consult your copy of the Drummer Boy Dresdens quilt pattern.
I’ve heard that it’s easy to get stuck while grouping dresden blades for these fans. What goes well together? Does the order matter? How scrappy is too scrappy?
My advice is to follow your fun. There are no rules but what makes you smile. Maybe you’ll be happiest if you just let them come together totally random style. Maybe you like to mix similar colors for a more blended look. Or, maybe, maybe you like different things on different days. That works too! With the quarter circle repetition as an anchoring point, this patchwork pattern can handle a lot of contrast and variety.
I thought you might like to see how I followed my fun in my latest drummer boy sewing session.
So as you can see, there are a bunch of different starting points for me when combining scraps. Some come together rather effortlessly, while others take more consideration. My rule of thumb - if I like it, it works! Have fun with the process and the outcome will be more likely to make you smile.
