exercise your Colors
Cheers to your enthusiastic response to Quilter’s Color Quest! And Happy Valentine’s Day too! Did you notice that my book is dedicated to the Readers of Stitched in Color? I heart you!
It’s all too easy to page through a pretty book, but not take any action on it, right? You know me - I’m all about making stuff happen. Maybe I would have been a coach in another life? Anyhoo, I’m excited to help you exercise your colors via Quilter’s Color Quest, based on The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color.
Are you wondering what in the world I am talking about? Ok, ok, I’ll get specific.
Have a looksee at the table of contents in my book:
You’ll see that the Color Workbook section is divided into themes like “Understanding Color” and “Exploring Neutrals”. Within these themes there are experiments, fourteen in all. These experiments are two-part.
Part 1 - Use the color swatches to work out the assignment in simple color. This is the Swatch Challenge.
Part 2 - Take it one step further, transforming your ideas to cloth via the Patchwork Challenge.
As you work through the book, you can make patchwork using the color ideas fostered by these challenges. Since the book is about color, the actual patchwork block you make with the fabrics you choose is not critical. I’ve used the bear paw block, but some other ideas are sawtooth stars (with the center square a different fabric than the points), appliqué hexagon flowers, or something like my modern dresden. A block that uses three fabrics, including the background fabric, is ideal for the exercises in the book.
If you do make bear paw blocks with the patchwork challenges, the book offers three quilt settings for your blocks so that you can make them into a quilt (or two) at the end of your journey. Above are photos of my quilts, demonstrating two bear paw setting ideas from the book.

It will be such fun to see what colors and fabrics they put together. There are lots of “right” answers, as the most important factor is always YOU. What you love is what is beautiful!
