Efflorescent, a finished quilt

Guess what? I worked a bit ahead of schedule on this one! I knew I would be more busy than usual at the end of February, since we’re in the process of moving house, so I jumped ahead with the After the Rain sew-along. As luck would have it, this allowed me to photograph my finished quilt during the big snow earlier this month! A fun photoshoot, as I'd never before experienced snow like that.

This, my third version of the After the Rain quilt, was made for a dear friend. I wanted it to feel like a cuddly hug from me, from across the ocean, so I pulled out all the stops to make it extra cozy. I’ve used wool batting, a flannel backing courtesy of The Confident Stitch and open, curvy Baptist Fan quilting.

I think you can almost feel the results here! The quilt is super lux. I can’t wait for Liz to get her hands on it! In fact, this one is already winging its way across the seas, as we speak.

Ta da! This is Efflorescent, my finished After the Rain quilt.

It turned out a little more pink-purple than I intended. I can chalk that up to a combination of Liz’ feisty personality and my personal color style. I think a pop of red-orange would have been more true to Liz; whereas, magenta is very me. The maker can’t help but show herself, right?

That said, the far right column with the deep mustard/teal combo is my favorite. It gives the quilt that zing that feels appropriately off-balance.

Speaking of balance, I totally dropped the quilt in the snow, in the making of this photo. You can see the snow clinging to the soft, Robert Kaufman flannel backing. Well, Liz, there’s a sampling of Dutch weather for you!

The quilt is bound with leftover Chalk & Charcoal Jennifer Sampou fabrics. I was really pleased with the organic visual texture that the Jennifer Sampou fabrics lent this quilt and will doubtless use her fabrics again.

Thanks again to The Confident Stitch for helping me assemble fabrics for this quilt! Want to sew the same quilt? There are still some After the Rain quilt kits left in stock, since they were able to replenish their offerings. Lucky! And you can find my After the Rain pdf pattern here.

Thanks for sewing and/or reading along with me, friends.
