Transparency baby quilt

How is it possibly late April already? This month has simply flown. My calendar in May is filling fast with special dates, including the due date of my friend. Good thing that her baby’s quilt is ready now. Hurrah!

I think she will like it. I hope she will like it. Minimalist and simple is rather hard for me. I so easily stray. I think that things were going well when I created the patchwork design and chose a color palette, but it’s possible that they got out of hand when it came to quilting - - -

I underestimated the effect of wool batting. It makes the simplest quilting really POP. I chose wool batting to give this baby blanket a bit of loft, some extra padding for baby on the floor perhaps. But, well, yeah. I thought I was quilting it simply, but it ended up making a strong statement.

This baby quilt is custom quilted. To emphasize the overlapping “transparency” squares I quilted straight lines in the cream squares. Where the cream squares overlap, a pretty grid forms. For the rich teal areas, I chose simple, yet elegant designs, but that’s probably where it got too fussy. Maybe a combination of custom quilting for the cream squares and hand tying for the teal areas would have been better.

Ah well, there is always the back when a simpler vibe is wanted! But this is no ordinary quilt back. It’s especially soft! I used a cotton jersey solid for the main fabric and strips of cuddle dot at two edges. The jersey feels supple and the cuddle is plush and silky. I expect that baby wil enjoy the textures.

Transparency baby quilt and a corresponding throw quilt version are patterns that I’m developing for Pas de Deux club members. This pattern will be released to all those sewing along with Pas de Deux as a bonus quilt pattern later this year.
