Wedge Cross for a pretty Pas de Deux
Can’t wait, can’t wait! In about a week’s time, Pas de Deux club members will receive the May installment in our sampler quilt. For those who started in January, this is the Wedge Cross group - one of my absolute favorites. It’s super simple foundation paper piecing, which makes for a satisfyingly precise group.
Plus, this is the part of our sampler quilt that gave rise to this very special quilt. Tulip Fields Diamond Wedge quilt pattern is available exclusively to Pas de Deux club members and comes included with May’s patchwork group. I hope to see its quilty friends and relations popping up soon online!
My new rendition of Pas de Deux quilt is a departure from the original. I’m weaving a sweet, spring palette throughout the quilt and softening the transitions between groups. Thus, I used my design wall to plan the Wedge Cross group. See how I’ve placed a grid of gold wedges and overlaid them with triangles. Many of the fabrics are repeated from surrounding patchwork groups, in order to create a sense of rhythm and continuity.
Once fabrics are chosen, sewing the blocks is a relaxing affair. At least, I find foundation paper piecing relaxing when it doesn’t have myriad tiny pieces.

New from Ruby Star Society!
Two pretty collections have just landed: Vessel and Reign. Winter Creek stocks each collection in full, plus coordinating canvas fabrics.
Voilà, the Wedge Cross group! Does my use of fabric in the diamonds remind you of hourglass blocks? It became a sort of squished hourglass or maybe they’re butterflies. Fun!
Here’s what I’ve sewn so far. The colors of my new Pas de Deux quilt are so very pretty. They remind me of ballet in that way, which fits right in with the inspiration of this sampler quilt! I will continue to use lots of soft peach, sometimes called ballet pink, in this quilt. Maybe its final name should be Ballet Melody or Sugar Plum Fairy. Hmm.
Speaking of my color palette, I found several fabrics at Nanno Creative that will serve this quilt well. My store of peach and gold fabrics was almost up, so I’ve refreshed it with CF Flora in Lingerie, Add it Up in Peach, and Cross Stitch in Library. Unintentionally, I also bought those Alma Butterflies, which absolutely belong in this quilt too.
I hope I have the chance to go further with Pas de Deux soon!
P. S. It’s not too late to join the Pas de Deux fun. The 2nd round of this block-of-the-month began in April, so you’ve only missed one installment. If you join now, you’ll receive April’s blocks right away and soon May’s as well. It’s a really fun project and totally scrap-friendly. Come discover your version!
