Stitched in Color

Whenever I move house I am confronted by all the bits and bobs of potential projects stashed away in my sewing room. One such nest of sparkly potential is the fabrics I cut for my book, The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color.

In order to illustrate different color and fabric concepts, I presented little fabric stories in the book. I still have many of those cuttings stored away in ziplock bags, since each one is like a little fabric seed packet, containing the color/style potential for a new quilt.

Once I made a quilt collecting the Color Catalog fabrics (located at the end of the book) into one quilt. That was satisfying!

Today I need to relax from the stress of moving. I am craving something easy and fun. Fooling around with these 2” x 3” cuttings feels right. I have no idea what or if it will become something, but small size + scrappy = good fun.

I started off by sewing 2” x 3” rectangles together in pairs. I’m pairing two fabrics that I like to see together, so it’s not totally random, nor is it planned. Once I had chain-pieced many pairs, I set about arranging them in 5 x 3 rectangle layouts. This will yield a finished block of 7.5” square.

Well, that was nice! I feel like making a lot more, which is a really good sign. Here comes a scrap quilt featuring my fabric scrap crumbs!
