Parsnips, a finished scrap quilt

Hoorah, it’s a finished quilt day!

Parsnips is the last quilt I will finish in my 1930’s home, so it is fitting that I have photographed her in the square out front. I adore the three grand trees, which grace the square. The trees, like the houses, are nearing 90 years old. Imagine all they have seen! Each autumn I have admired their changing leaves.

But the quilt! I love that too. It turned out great, if I do say so myself. I already had faith in it as a scrap quilt, but the green and black sashing pushed it way beyond ordinary. I imagine that it will bring such a cozy, joy to someone’s home.

Each block is made up of tiny rectangles, cut 2” x 3”. Some are fussy cut; most are not. Many fabrics are used just once in the whole quilt. Such a fun variety to touch and explore! I am also very pleased with the Sparkle quilting, a shape that mimics the black sashing stars.

Parsnips quilt finished about 59” square.

What do you think about the binding? I was pretty happy to find something that was colorful, like the scraps, and not too dark or too light. To my eye the binding blends nicely with the work overall. I suspect it would work well for many scrap quilts.

That binding fabric is Vestment from Anna Maria’s Fluent collection. It’s in stock now at Quilt Sandwich.

The backing might surprise you! I was going to do a simple backing, but suddenly got inspired by the moving-house-clean-up energy. This backing is made up entirely of linen scraps, some of which I had started piecing into improv blocks earlier this year. I was able to use almost all of my smallish linen scraps, which I store separately from my quilting cotton scraps. Three gold stars for me!

Bonus - the linen makes the quilt a tad bit heavier than quilting cotton and thus a tad bit warmer and cozier. This is definitely a cozy winter quilt, and just in time for that season. Yesterday, it snowed!

So, that’s a wrap! Parsnips was super fun to make, so I would be happy to create a pattern if you all would like. Let me know. Meanwhile, this quilt is listed for sale in my Handmades shop. Normally, she would be hard to let go, but I have that lighten-up energy still flowing, haha. I’d love to ship her out before we move!
