my new take on Wild Oranges

Yes! This is definitely my favorite stage of a sew-along. The planning and pattern writing give way to the pleasure of sewing a quilt alongside all of you.

With Wild Oranges I’m curious to use the quilt pattern, following the fabric maps to create a new version in a more sit-back-and-relax kind of way. Just what I need!

Are you wondering if it’s too late to join in? Course not! You can totally join us. Hop over to the master sew-along post for all the info and dive right in, friends.

It’s time to gather your fabrics!

For my second go at Wild Oranges, I am inspired by the teal and green palette of my Orange Peel blocks for Pas de Deux. It’s no secret that I love green. Plus, this palette is nearly opposite from my Kismet version, which ups the fun-factor.

To start, I pull fabrics from my stash with a pretty, floral vibe. There are greens, teals and yellow-greens, plus a bit of peach thanks to that peach/teal floral near top center called Magnolia florals by Cotton + Steel. Love that one! A good dose of solids and basics brings a sense of serenity to the collection.

This is more fabric variety than I need for a Wild Oranges quilt, but gathering fabrics without worrying about the details is how I work best.

Now to imagine how my fabrics could become a Wild Oranges quilt. I have spread out a medium value dusty aqua solid, called Jungle from FreeSpirit Designer Solids. That’s a color I would enjoy in abundance! It will be my focus shade for this quilt (M1). The Magnolia Floral and Basking Buds Jade are two of my favorite medium value prints in my fabric stack. I lay them and other favorites on the Jungle solid.

Looking good! I think I’m headed in the right direction.

check out the Juki Sale Event! I sew on a Juki machine (TL2010Q), have had it for years and I love, love, love how dependable it is. If you want to learn to free motion quilt, this is an outstanding model for that.

It’s time to start identifying fabrics for the Wild Oranges Fabric Key. I want to use lots of solids in my new Wild Oranges quilt, just as in the original. Beginning with the solids anchors the quilt in an analogous color scheme. The low value Kona Candy Green at left will be my L1. M1 is Jungle and M2 is Kona Fern, a soft contrast green. D1 will be a dark evergreen solid, origin unknown.

And here are all of my Wild Orange selections! They are organized by value and in numerical order. What do you think?

I won’t be surprised if things change a bit along the way, but I’m pleased with where this is heading.

When we are cutting and sewing Wild Oranges that Fabric Key is going to be VERY useful. Besides, I think you will enjoy cutting and pasting swatches to record your fabric choices. It’s a cute little piece of art already. Anyway, I got a kick out of it, haha.

If you are sewing along, I’d love it if you share your fabric stacks and Fabric Key’s on Instagram. I’m curious to see. Enjoy the planning phase!
