Wild Oranges Sew-Along

Easy Applique Curves!

Have you always wanted to sew an orange peel quilt? Come indulge in these pretty points and soft curves this fall!

The Wild Oranges quilt pattern begins with fabric and color choice advice to set you on the right path. The quilt can be entirely machine sewn with beginner-friendly applique. Use the quilt maps to arrange fabrics so that the print and value relationships that make the sample quilt so charming will easily carry over into your new Wild Oranges rendition!

Join us by subscribing to the sew-along and following #WildOrangesQuilt on Instagram. Your shared sew-along photos qualify you to win prizes along the way.

You can sew-along, whatever your pace!

the Quilt

This patchwork design is created with a grid of squares and orange peel applique. Applique is simply the technique of layering one fabric over another. Because the curves are created via layering, applique requires no fancy curved piecing skills. Wild Oranges teaches machine applique, a fast and beginner-friendly variety. You can do this!

Pattern includes 2 sizes: throw and baby

Kismet Wild OrangeS QUILT

Color Palette: oranges, red and pinks

Size: Throw, 60” x 68”

Baby Wild Oranges QUILT

Size: Baby, 40” x 40”

Are you intimidated by the color and fabric choices? Don’t be. I’ve written the pattern to be adaptable to your needs. It offers multiple levels of color challenge, depending upon how you wish to use it. As part of my Color Mentor pattern series, Wild Oranges teaches color design concepts. In this case we’re exploring analogous color schemes and value in quilt-making.

the Supplies

Wild Oranges requires just 16 fabrics - fewer than most of my patterns. As such, this is a great pattern for featuring a favorite fabric collection, as I’ve done with Kismet by Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics. Choose some of your favorite prints and then anchor the look with a healthy helping of solids. The solids allow your prints to shine in this dynamic patchwork layout without becoming visually overwhelming.

No special rulers required! Use pattern printables and cardboard from around the house to create the tools you need for lovely peels. Liquid starch is one special tool that I highly recommend. I use Best Press, but any starch will do.

Fabrics

  • Quilt top: 5 medium value fabrics, 4 dark value fabrics, and 7 low value fabrics. Fabric quantities detailed in the pattern.

  • Binding: 1/2 yard for baby or throw quilt

  • Backing: 4 yards for throw or 1 1/4 yard for baby
