Tulip Field Diamond Wedge quilt

Oh, happy day! The sun is shining, the daffodils are perky and bright, and my Diamond Wedge quilt is finished!

Ta da! A rainbow of diamonds sparkles with vibrant color, bringing to mind a field of spring flowers. The wedges in between the diamonds offer slivers of contrasting blue and lavender skies. This wash of contrast enhances the diamond colors just as a bright, sunny day brings a garden to life.

I’m so, so happy with how it came out. It’s a rainbow quilt, but more than a rainbow quilt. The integration of contrasting blues and purples is in some ways a small idea, but it makes a big impact. I don’t think I would have come to it without seeing Vincent Van Gogh’s work. I’m thankful for that inspiration and that I decided to push my personal boundaries, rather than sew something safe.

Tulip Field Diamond Wedge quilt is finished with custom quilting, to embellish each diamond with swooping geometric lines. Though much more time-consuming than all-over quilting, it really takes the patchwork to the next level in my eyes. Makes the whole quilt sparkle that extra bit!

Speaking of sparkle, there’s a bit of a cathedral windows effect when the sun shines through. Fun surprise.

I backed the quilt with Ruby and Bee Tumeric. The warm, golden hue compliments every color, in my opinion, and shows off the quilting texture nicely. In fact, all of the fabrics in the quilt top are also Ruby and Bee solids. I used the original collection of solids curated by Heather Ross and Annabel Wrigley for Windham Fabrics. The colors or saturated and strong, ideal for a spring palette. You can find Ruby and Bee Solids at Fat Quarter Shop.

When choosing a binding fabric, I wanted something that would not darken the pale wedge/edge section at the top of the quilt. This geometric print from my stash did the trick. It also has an angled vibe, just like the patchwork.

Tulip Field Diamond Wedge quilt is now listed in my Handmades shop. I can sense that this is a special quilt, so I’ve thought twice (or thrice) about keeping it. But, really, there is something delicious about sending a special quilt out into the world. Spread the beauty, spread the joy!

If you’re a member of Pas de Deux, you will get to sew this Wedge Cross block as part of our Pas de Deux block-of-the-month club. It is a foundation paper pieced block that will deliver to club members in May. The Diamond Wedge quilt is a bonus quilt pattern, also delivering to members with May’s club delivery.

Enjoy cultivating your own field of diamond flowers!
