Circus Cabin: Week 2 Blocks

You’ve chosen a color palette and sorted your fabrics - now we can really get this party started! The Circus Cabin Sew-along goes into full swing this week, as we begin stitching out lovely log cabin blocks. Have a great time!

Week 2: sew 5 blocks

Everything’s prepped, and you’ve sewed your first test block - there’s nothing stopping you! I have a feeling that once you start sewing these Circus Cabin blocks, you won’t want to stop. That’s what always happens to me - - -

I reached for some of my favorite winter-palette scraps to create this pair of Circus Cabin blocks. I’m really drawn to the cool greens, like evergreen trees.

Notice that my “light value” solid in the block above left is more of a medium value teal. This works because most of my winter fabrics are quite dark. I can mix in some mediums into my “lights” and the contrast between light and dark still reads clearly with this particular quilt.

This Nutcracker print by Rifle Paper Fabrics co. is oh-so-cute! Could it be any more perfect for my wintry themed Circus Cabin? I had just enough scrap fabric for this one block. So satisfying.

In fact, it seems that Rifle Paper Fabrics are turning into a theme with this quilt. Apparently they tend to have a wintry palette. I hadn’t noticed that before, but it makes sense. Many designers have a pet palette that comes out in the majority of their work.

Soon you’ll be able to make your first Circus Cabin block quartet! Such a humble block, but they make quite an impact as a group.

Don’t feel that you have to limit yourself to sewing only 5 new blocks this week. If you’re on a roll, run with it! Kathy G. said, “I started my Circus Cabin and in two days have 10 blocks made.  It’s so addictive and easy.  LOVE IT.”

I’m with you, Kathy. I’ve sewn more than the required number of blocks too. So exciting to see the quilt beginning to take shape!
