Nursery Versery Contest!
Heather Ross' most recent collection, Nursery Versery, has landed! And, I don't know about you, but it was love at first sight between me and that spider.
Last week I received 4 pieces of the collection from Sew Modern, including the Itsy Bitsy print in stormy gray and glowing golden yellow. These fabrics from the yellow and gray color scheme are excellent "gender neutral" prints, and the rest of the collection has some super-cool girlie hues including dark purple, magenta and petal pink. I'm lovin the Itsy Bitsy spider print in every colorway (here's a gorgeous picture of the pink one) for sure!
Soo... how about we have some fun? A contest perhaps. Yes, yes! Sew Modern is backing us up with a 1/2 yard set of the complete Nursery Versery collection up for grabs! To join in, make something - anything! - using 1 or more prints from Nursery Versery by Heather Ross, and enter your project photo into the Nursery Versery Contest here by midnight (U.S. eastern time) Sunday August 26th:
On Monday the 27th I'll choose 3 Finalists whose projects stand out (in my ridiculously subjective opinion) for awesome use of their chosen Nursery Versery fabric(s). Then you'll help me out by voting for the actual winner from among the finalists. Anyone can join in - blogger or not - from anywhere in the world.
Projects don't have to be big and they don't have to use a lot of Nursery Versery fabrics (just at least one). Actually, Nursery Versery is a pretty small scale, so it's not likely you'll need much of any particular print to make an impact. You can mix in as many of your own prints/solids/whatever as you like! You could even go without a sewing machine. Just have fun with the fabric however it floats your boat!
To start us off, I went ahead and made something with my Nursery Versery picks. On Wednesday night just as I was heading to bed, a picture formed in my mind. I had been planning to play with log cabins, but suddenly I knew that it needed to rain spiders. So, obviously, a storm cloud must be involved. And, isn't it Dr. Seuss who says "Mouses in Houses"? I think, yes.
I sketched out my design sans contacts and stayed up waaaay too late picking out scraps for the project. Next day I made all the key elements - first the sun (which I made without a pattern or templates - just totally on the fly. It gave me a big head for at least a day that it turned out so well. Luckily, I didn't blog about it then. Wink. And, do you want a tutorial for a no template way of sewing that 8-pointed star?). After the sun, the houses (my first houses - super fun!), the cloud, the stars.
On day too, I worked to piece everything together. If you can't imagine a world where it's raining over here...
and it's sunny over here, you don't live in the south. At our house it is frequently raining in the backyard and not the front. Seriously! And this summer it's been raining like every day. So, watch out happy mouse biker. There's yellow dots of sunshine falling on ya now, but I'm thinking a storm is on the way...
I added the storm cloud to the quilt top after quilting the base layer with an organic grid. The cloud is fused to the quilt with Steam-a-Seam 2 Lite so that it'll never budge. Some cloud quilting and edge stitching finished her off.
The Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the water spout.... Do you think that's Heather's handwriting?
This one's my favorite spider. Asleep.
Speaking of sleep, I figure this 27" square mini quilt is destined for life with a babe. So, I backed it in Dear Stella Confetti Dot flannel in stone gray. Delightfully cuddly stuff!
Well now, that's my Nursery Versery project. Course, I'm not entering the contest, but you get the idea. Though, remember, you can making anything that includes 1 or more fabrics from the collection. I promise not to be biased towards quilts. It's not about that - it's about enjoying these adorable prints!
