bossy.
I've been tasked this week with making a zip pouch from scraps. Yes, it's a swap, so I can't tell you much more, but it all started here...
This is my gnarly pile of triangle scraps. They mock me with their cumbersome triangle-ness. Somewhere early on I began saving the trimmings from making quilt binding. You know how you connect the long binding strips with a diagonal seam to reduce bulk? I save those triangles. They're small.
Sigh.
I know I could just not save them, but I have happily used them on occasion to make wee wonky stars. Which was good. So, I should make a whole quilt of scrappy wonky stars! I need more baby quilts to make, please.
So back at the sewing table, the irksome triangle scraps suggested half-square triangle patchwork for the zip pouch. And, since this was something that I feel pretty sure my swap partner will like, I set to work. The smallest triangles, the ones from making quilt binding, were all the right colors for my partner. Unfortunately they would only make tiny 1.5" squares that will finish at 1" squares. I told the little triangles that half square triangles (HST) that small are only for complete loons. But, they were really bossy.
I think I took a break to check my email after making... like.... six?
Actually, yes, it was six. I checked when I came back and settled in for a real sew, having come to terms with my insanity.
So I sewed and I trimmed and I sewed and I trimmed times a million. See, I have my pile of ten thousand trimmings to prove it! Though, that could be a slight exaggeration.
And the way-too-tiny flock of HST grew until they weren't quite so bossy and had developed a more charming, ok let's say "purty" persona. Now, if I can only just sew them together without spoiling the effect. I'll have this finished soon!
