Fabric Play
I'm going to take a wee break from typing up Penny Sampler lessons to share with you some fabrics I've been arranging lately! But first, some stashings.
Of all the colors in my stash I seem to go through yellow the fastest (or I buy it the least?). And is anyone else noticing that their stash is mainly warm, golden yellows? Yellows can be on the green side (which makes them cool) or on the orange side (which makes them warm). I think it's not just me, because after doing some online shopping at my favorite stops, I found so many golden yellows up for grabs, and hardly any bright, pure yellows or cool yellows.
Enter Waterfront. The Waterfront Domino Dot print comes in lots of great colors, but when I saw the yellow I knew it was a done deal. Bright, cool yellows make oranges look like themselves. Also, they just make me happy. I like warm yellows too, don't get me wrong, but I want to be able to have both in my sewing palette.
Here up against the Meyer Lemon Pearl Bracelet print, you can see that Starfruit Domino Dot is a decidedly cooler tone. Just what I needed! I also bought the peach, a color that my Jade Princess quilt showed me can be tough to find, and the purple, since it's more of a true purple than most of mine.
Also in my FabricBubb order was a classic black stripe for bindings and more white dimple dot minky for baby quilt backs!
While I was evaluating my stash, I decided to repurchase two favorite fabrics, which aren't so easy to find anymore. Fortunately, Lark Cottons had both this Running Stitch print, which is the most perfect shade of turquoise, and Snaps in Cream, which I fell in love with in the making of my Dogwood Blossoms quilt.
I love that the Snaps is a tiny stripe, but actually reads as gray.
The other day something I wore sent me scurrying to my fabrics to pull together this color scheme - lots of red with touches of pink, navy, royal blue and turquoise (hello, Running Stitch!). It's such a pleasure and privilege to have a stash so that I can work immediately to sort out color inspirations when the mood strikes.
I thought you might also like to see some fabrics that I considered, but removed from my stack. Both fabrics in the upper left corner had another secondary color that I didn't want (green leaves in one and dark pinky/purple stripes in the other). This is pretty typical for me. Little unwelcome details bug me, when it comes to colors in fabrics, unless I'm going for a clashy, scrappy, carefree look. I guess that's why I buy so many helpful fabrics with simple, one color + neutral color schemes. In fact, all of the fabrics that I just stashed are "helpful fabrics". I think they make choosing and coordinating fabrics from different collections immensely easier.
