Dala Horse - a paper pieced pattern
Since I created my Dala Horse block for the Penny Sampler, I've had many requests to release this particular block as a stand along pattern. Well, friends, here it is!
Now's your chance to make your own collection of charming Swedish Dala Horses or one sweet pet for a pillow or other small project. Wouldn't it be perfect for the holidays?
This downloadable pdf pattern includes a Color Sheet for easy planning, left and right-facing Dala versions and even a video to walk you through sketch stitch embroidery. This is not a difficult machine paper piecing pattern, and I've included pictures to walk you through the assembly. Dala Horse is appropriate for experienced beginners at machine paper piecing.
This time around, I made my Dala for Eleni's room. I've used a non-directional print for the background (Botanics Metallic Foliage in Fern), my favorite Comma Dot for the body and scraps for the rest. It's framed in a swath of original Good Folks fabric. I love the bold contrast between the blue-green background and vivid yellows and reds!
The horse itself came together all in one sitting and then waited patiently for a new feather/down pillow form. These are my go-to forms. They hold their shape and are affordable to boot.
Today I quilted her up
and fitted her with a soft, cuddly corduroy backing by Denyse Schmidt.
Oh, happy handmade goodness!
I wonder, what will you do with yours? Please, somebody make a whole quilt of Dalas! Pattern available now in my shop.
