little village {Penny Sampler}

Wondering where that Cathedral Windows mosaic contest came from?  Well, Sunday before last I had the chance to enjoy a beautiful church with mesmerizing stained glass windows.  The artist's use of color so impacted me that I went home and immediately re-thought my Penny Sampler fabrics with a generous infusion of sapphire blue.  Soon after I shared this image on Instagram:

And later that week.. a mosaic contest inspired by the same experience!

I feel so much more confident about this direction for my Penny Sampler palette.  The dark gray border remains, as do the greens and purples, but blue becomes a dominant theme with a few pops of salmon for contrast.  It feels right!

Those changes in hand I was able to sew my next block for the 6-month Penny Sampler:  Little Village.  This block entices me to play up my color palette by including all the colors, but I'm trying to be restrained.  I'd like my blocks to be almost monochromatic with limited value contrast so that the whole quilt feels less busy.  It's hard, especially when working on a block like this with so many distinct elements.

For starters I made my little houses in blues, grays and purples.

The metallic Netorious print makes my windows shine.  I can't decide if my favorite house is the gray stripe with a single, square window or the gray tree house with a mossy green roof.  Probably the second.  Gotta love a purple striped door!

My favorite thing about this block is actually the background.  I like that the two fabrics I used merge color-wise, but read as flowery ground and stripey sky otherwise.  It's not the sapphire blue that I most want to emphasize in my quilt, but this softer true blue will compliment sapphire well.

Actually, I'm short on sapphire fabrics.  Maybe you'll help me find some new ones via the Cathedral Window's mosaic contest!

p.s.  Not sure if there is any interest in sharing your Penny Sampler progress via monthly link ups?  Well, let's try it.  What have you made so far?  Show us here!
