Penny Patch blocks

Hi, friends! Before the month gets away from me, there are a couple more blocks to be made for my Penny Sampler quilt. At the end of the March pattern club packet, I’ve tucked away a little patchwork block that gives the Penny Sampler its name. It’s the Penny Patch block, a simple and sweet modified 4-patch.

I rifled through my Penny Sampler fabrics to find prints that I haven’t yet had a chance to include in the quilt. These little blocks are a nice place to use special fabrics that really fit the nature of your Penny Sampler, but don’t always suit the large, showy blocks.

Those windy clouds, bright blue fishes and orange flowers will feel right at home in my Dutch-inspired sampler . I even incorporated some map fabric, with a nod to the Dutch explorers.

Tales of Cloth

All the charm of a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt, for about a quarter of the work! Tales of Cloth is releasing three new appliqué patterns for English paper pieced blocks this weekend. Look for the Small Change Quilts pattern!

You might notice that my little squares are oriented in a downward diagonal, instead of the upward diagonal demonstrated in the Penny Sampler pattern book. Feel free to do yours either way. For some reason, I preferred it this way, this time around.

Here are my finished blocks all in a row! And that’s my basket of Penny Sampler scraps. If you’re feeling wide open when choosing fabrics for your Penny Patch blocks, why not pull from your existing scraps for our sampler quilt? Repeating fabrics is always a good idea.

p.s. I’m sorry to say that there is a typo in the March edition of the Penny Sampler Pattern Club. Look out when sewing the Teapot block. The fabric for piece 2d is listed correctly as background fabric in the cutting list. However, in the sewing directions for segment 2, piece 2d is referred to as “contrast” fabric. It should be background fabric, as this is the piece that goes below the spout of our teapot. Thanks Linda A. for letting me know! My apologies, friends!

p.s.s. It’s not too late to join the Penny Sampler Pattern Club. You can start sewing Jan-March blocks now. April’s edition is due to arrive in a few week’s time.
