Bridge for Penny Sampler Pattern Club

Sometimes it feels so good to rediscover a project that’s been stored away. It can be exciting to get all the blocks out again and take stock of the bigger picture!

Yesterday I put my Dutch-inspired Penny Sampler back up on my design wall. Immediately I felt so refreshed by the light and airy color scheme (for me, anyway) and the playful layout of diverse sizes and shapes. Fun!

Today I sewed the Bridge block for my Penny Sampler. I’m repeating one of my background fabrics to bring unity to the quilt. For the other fabrics, I chose understated fabrics, since this block is not meant to be center stage.

Bridge is a simple block, not so showy, but it has interesting dimensions that adds to the modern feel of the Penny Sampler. One of the things I enjoy about the quilt is the way the blocks interact in unusual ways, which is totally related to the irregular sizes, of course!

I’ve been foundation paper piecing so much this year, definitely more than ever before! Now I can really coast through the process, and I find the precise nature of the results ever satisfying.

This block pattern includes a string of half square triangle blocks. You can use the printout to create a string of HST’s in any length, for whatever quilt border you might need. I LOVE it as a quilt border. Take a sneak peak at my just-finished Seafarers quilt top to see what I mean.

Ok, so that’s one of my August Penny Sampler blocks done. I’m craving the next one! I feel like this quilt is ready to be finished. Do we really have to wait several more months? Haha. I may not be the best personality for blocks-of-the-month projects.
