Bee block sewing

One thing I love about being part of a quilting bee is the way it utilizes my scraps. Each month I sew 2-3 blocks from a specific prompt. Usually I can these put together solely from scrap fabrics since I only have a few blocks to make. It feels amazing to be able to contribute in such an economical, convenient way.

Today I have two batches of bee blocks to share. First, February.

Each bee member was to sew two rows of solid colored triangles, using any colors from our scrap drawers. Lead quilter Eva-Marie asked that each row also contain gray and white triangles, in order to unify the collection.

This is just the kind of simple, mindless sewing that I needed during the moving process. Here are the rows I contributed in February!

This morning I’ve sewn March blocks for do. Good Stitches. This time we’re making rectangular blocks, using mainly navy fabrics. The blocks can have simple, free-pieced white stars scattered about or they can be all “sky”.

I started by cutting small navy rectangle scraps, something I have in abundance. (Somehow I always have lots of navy solid scraps in particular. Shrug.) I pulled a few prints from my stash as well, see bottom left.

In the end I didn’t use the white-on-navy prints (birds, clouds, polka dots) because it seemed like those white motifs would distract to much from the pieced stars. These little stars, by the way, are a great way to use low volume crumb scraps!

Here are my finished March blocks, soon to be on their way to Charlotte.

And with that I’m up-to-date on my bee blocks and free to start a new project. I wonder what comes next?
