Jade Ikat, a finished quilt

Block by block, step by step - someone’s been closely monitoring the journey of this quilt. Someone who was veeeerrrry excited to discover her blocks becoming a quilt top, when she returned from school the other day!

pssst - - - are you sewing along with #Ikatquilt? Don’t miss the reminder at the end of this picture-packed post to put your hat in the ring for our sew-along prize.

I’m excited too! The blocks could feel monotonous at times, I think because the colors are so harmonious and the prints a bit understated. Once joined together, the quilt top certainly doesn’t disappoint. Joining up the blocks for Ikat quilt pattern allows the secondary shapes to blend in with the main diamonds so that you can’t really see where the blocks begin and end. This is one of those projects that feels kind of clever at the end!

Aria and I browsed quilting pattern possibilities together and settled on a new-to-me pattern, which I’m calling Echo Leaf. It has a modern, yet natural sensibility. I think it gives her quilt a nice curvy feeling, to soften all the crisp corners.

Oh my gosh - the backing is amazing! Aria and I can’t stop oohing and aahing and petting it. This is plush Cuddle velour in a handy extra wide size that’s ideal for quilt backs. Fat Quarter Shop has a whole bunch of colors on offer. The Cuddle has a slight sheen and a super-soft hand. I still used my go-to Quilter’s Dream low-loft batting, which combines with the Cuddle to create a lofty, heavy, warm quilt.

Just look at how the finished quilt collects in warm, cozy puddles. Aria loves cold weather and fluffy quilts. Do you think she’s going to have a harder time getting out of bed in the morning?

And here’s the full quilt reveal - Jade Ikat quilt. She’s a generous twin-sized quilt. So often a restrained color scheme packs a dramatic punch at the end. I’m really happy with how it tuned out, and Aria is too.

She’s bound in Boscage Tropical, also available at Fat Quarter Shop. In fact, all of the fabrics for this quilt top were sourced there, hand-picked for color and mostly-geometric appeal. You can find a list of fabrics, enough to make a throw-sized Ikat quilt, at the bottom of this page.

I love to photograph quilts at this fabulous old barn, which is located in a public nature area on the edge of our city. A big thanks to my brave quilt holders - this time both my husband and my daughter - for making mom’s photo dreams come true, even when the timing is not so convenient.
