Nineteen Thirty Sew-Along

a Springtime sew-along!

Like a mini block-of-the-month, Nineteen Thirty offers an array of engaging sewing experiences designed to be savored over several months.

The Nineteen Thirty quilt pattern is 25 pages of clear, step-by-step directions, beginning with ideas for sewing the quilt with different fabrics. Need more help with fabric choices? Use the cutting and sewing cues in combination with the quilt map to reproduce the value relationships that make the sample quilt so balanced.

Join us by subscribing to the sew-along and following #NineteenThirtyQuilt on Instagram. You can sew-along, whatever your pace!

the Quilt

This patchwork design has three parts: the medallion center, the orchid flower block and the patchwork border. The medallion center looks more difficult than it is. Smart design choices make it surprisingly straightforward to sew. The orchid flower blocks are created with a combination of basic curve piecing and appliqué. Appliqué is simply the technique of layering one fabric over another. Since there’s not too much of it, this is a good opportunity to slow down with meditative hand appliqué, which creates the most lovely finish. Nineteen Thirty teaches these skills. You can do this!

Size: Throw, 66” x 66”

Are you intimidated by the color and fabric choices? I get that. You can majorly simplify this quilt by using fewer colors and fabrics. Choose, for example, 6 prints for the orchid flowers and repeat each print twice. Consider using one consistent fabric for all the Orchid block seeds. The quilt itself is elegant and engaging, so it doesn’t require a complex fabric story to sing!

the Supplies

My quilt was designed using a fat quarter set of the Bramble fabric collection. Do the same with a favorite fabric collection or reproduce my quilt with the quilt kit.

Will you be sewing from your fabric stash? Realize that you can use less fabric than listed in the pattern. The pattern calls for variety, because that is the look of my quilt. You could use fewer dark value and light value fat quarters and still have enough fabric. From each fat quarter you can cut 1 set of orchid petals, 1 set of seeds and have leftover to cut squares for the small patchwork. If you’ll be sewing 2 orchid flowers in each print, opt for a 1/2 yard cut. To cut all the seeds in one consistent fabric, opt for a 1 yard cut.

No specialty rulers required! Use pattern printables and cardboard from around the house to create the tools you need for lovely curves. Liquid starch is one special tool that I highly recommend. I use Best Press, but any starch will do. You will need 2.5” square and 4.5” square quilting rulers, which will come in handy for many, many quilts. Lastly, I recommend a small rotary cutter (28 mm), for cutting out these small curves.

  • Print Fabric Fat Quarters: 5 medium value fabrics, 8 dark value fabrics, and 16 low value fabrics.
