Wonky Quarter Log Cabins
Today I took a break from my Kaleidoscope project to sew some fast and fun log cabin blocks. These are the bee block for October in my circle of do. Good Stitches, an online charity quilting bee. Our group has been asked to make quarter log cabin blocks, using lots of bright colors and in a wonky style.
Bright colors? Why, yes please. This assignment sounds like a great chance to use multi-colored prints, which I keep separate in my scrap stash. I started with a few square-ish scraps and a handful of multi-colored string scraps.
These quarter log cabin blocks begin with true squares. Then you add logs on two sides of the square in a wonky or liberated piecing style. This means that the logs do not have to be straight and do not have to made up of a single fabric. Here you can see how I purposely trimmed the purple log to a create fun angle. Plus, I pieced the little white flower print at the outermost corner of the other block-in-process.

And, tada - my finished blocks! As you can see, they really got wonky. Like patchwork monsters! Especially the one on the left. And in good time for Halloween too ;)
I am totally itching to trim these blocks up to 12.5” square, but the lead quilter requested that we send in untrimmed blocks so that she can be sure to trim them consistently. Smart. But, yeah, I am so curious how they will look once trimmed!
