coming soon: Starbright Stars!

Once upon a time, ten whole years ago, I created my first Starbright Stars scrappy star quilt - - -

And you have been asking for the pattern ever since.

Because here is what’s special about this: the stars are completely machine pieced! This patchwork is sewn without any y-seams or fiddly techniques. All you need is angled patchwork sewing skills and - bam - stars are born!

Good news - it’s coming soon as a stand alone pattern!

Stars - they’re endlessly charming, right? This particular quilt exudes such a happy energy. The pattern was love at first sight and just the beginning of my Starbright Stars journey.

Can you see how this construction method works? You piece together triangles and diamonds to make triangle blocks.  Each triangle block corner becomes a point of a six-pointed star.

I was so jazzed about my Starbright Stars construction method that I developed it as a pattern long ago, but that pattern has only been available as a part of Angled Class, so that students could use it to develop their piecing techniques.

Around the time that I created Angled, I also shared the pattern with my quilting bee to create a collaborative charity quilt. My bee mates made triangle blocks with pink star points and low volume backgrounds. Our quilt turned out gorgeous, if I do say so myself! Plus, that experience was a good way to test and perfect the pattern.

But I wasn’t done with Starbright Stars. In fact, I have returned to the pattern again and again.

Fall 2018 I made the Autumn Fading Starbright Stars quilt. The stars in this version are each made up of a single fabric, rather than scrappy star points. I still used a variety of grays for the background, for depth. I finished it with custom quilting to really make the stars pop.

Gosh I love how the custom quilting turned out! I remember that it was such a pet-able quilt.

And then I decided to play with the scale. Using principles which I teach in Angled class, you will understand how to cut and sew Starbright Stars at the scale you desire. It’s actually not hard at all.

I made this pretty wall hanging with miniature Starbright Stars, which hangs in my sewing room today.

Would you like to machine-sew sparkly Starbright Stars? This September you can join us for the Starbright Stars Sew-Along OR for Angled Class. The choice is yours.
