Emerge quilt for ::Angled::

Have you ever made a lonestar quilt?  It's an oversized, dramatic star quilt with a fresh, modern feel - even if it is a classic!  Last year I made a lonestar duvet cover for our master bedroom with a huge, applique patchwork star.  It's such an enjoyable make, that I knew I had to include the style in my upcoming Angled online class.

Emerge is a study in diamonds, designed as the class quilt for the second week of Angled.  This quilt is a comfortable throw size that you can easily sew up in a week or so.  It's a quick sew, but makes a big impact!  And given the timing, it would definitely make a wonderful holiday gift.

During our second week of Angled lessons, we'll discuss how to cut and sew 30 degree, 45 degree and 60 degree diamonds, as well as how to design with this elegant shape.  Then follows the complete Emerge quilt pattern and a fun, liberated block to make with your cutting scraps.

As you can see, I appliqued my Emerge star over Ikea Britten Nummer.  This is a 59" wide fabric that allows the star to hover perfectly to one side.  Because this is an applique style lonestar quilt, you can use a printed background with no trouble at all.   You could also, of course, use a solid, but it doesn't have to be quilting cotton.  Consider linen or a velvet!  Something woven (not knit) and about 60" wide is perfect.

I actually used linen and velvet on the quilt back.  It feels so luxurious!

Following my detailed directions, students will applique the star and quilt the star portion of the quilt all at once, creating a beautiful star echo on the quilt back.  I added cursive quilting, following the Britten Nummer font throughout the negative space of the quilt top.  Those who prefer straight lines could simply echo the star shape to fill the negative space.
