{the Purge} Little Dresses + Links + Prizes
Are you purging along? Come one, come all to show us purge progress for your chance to win from Fabricworm!But first, I have more Purge inspiration for you! If you have larger cuts of unloved fabrics, say 3/4 yard and larger, you can whip up some Little Dresses for Africa in a jiffy. These are simple pillowcase dresses that are collected by an organization and forwarded to Africa to be gifted to children by relief teams. (You can also make britches for boys, by the way.) They're really easy to make, even if you've never done clothing before. Just follow this tutorial, designed for folks sewing from yardage.
As a part of my Purge effort, I recruited some local sewing friends to sew along with me. In advance of our sewing night, I cut out the dresses, so I'd be available to organize and troubleshoot. Little Dresses for Africa needs a variety of sizes. Use your bigger cuts of fabric to make larger dresses. That's perfect when having very little leftover is the point!
Once the girls arrived, we found a job for everyone and made these assembly line style. The jobs in order: pressing elastic casings and hems, stitching elastic casing/stuffing elastic, sewing side seams (French seams are great!), attaching bias tape at armholes and the final hem stitch.
Altogether we made 5 Pretty Potent dresses in a couple of hours. Nice! Yay for bright colors and girly prints. Even if they weren't totally inspiring my quilting, they had potential for sure.
These two little dresses are my favorites. Don't you think that the coneflower dress with the pale mint straps is going to be just gorgeous on someone with a dark complexion? Such a win-win to use bold fabrics this way!
