these Harvest Skies

I love selecting fabrics based on an image or concept like autumnal skies. It gives me such a sense of direction, yet feels open to discovery. Lately I’ve been working on a quilt inspired by fall colors and my favorite autumnal delights.

Choosing fabrics. Stitched in Color.jpg

Here in The Netherlands autumn has been so rainy that I thought I might try to mix gray skies into my blue background blocks. I selected this gray moon fabric for the background and the other three fabrics for the Flower Pod style bearpaw block. (The pattern for this block is part of my book - The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color).

The block that came to be is charming and very autumnal. But, sadly, it didn’t mix well with my blue-background blocks. Oh well. This little stray might find its way to the quilt back or become a project seed for yet another quilt!

There is already so much variety in my background fabrics, that it seems sticking to blues is a must! Fortunately, I have some stormy hues. It’s feeling right.

Moody yellow block. Stitched in Color.jpg

I’ve used a few fabrics from the Fanciful collection in my quilt, like the moody yellow floral that makes this block. If you’re searching for fall-inspired fabrics, Fanciful is absolutely spot on.

Ta da - a quilt top! Time to prepare a backing so that I can finish her up.

Happy weekend, all!
