Geesey Geesey: on the Design Wall

Over the course of several weeks, I’ll be making a Geesey Geesey quilt alongside you. We’re almost done!

Week 6: Sewing, Batch 4
How are your geese coming along? This week our goal is to complete all 230 flying geese blocks for the Geesey quilt. I hope that by now you’ve found your rhythm for sewing geese and you’re very much enjoying the process. This week, also sew your same-geese into pairs, if you haven’t done that already. That will make the assembly phase (next week!) feel much lighter.
And now comes my favorite part - seeing them all together!
If you’re lucky enough to have a design wall, it’s a good idea to put your geese up before you’ve completing finished sewing them all. Especially if you’re making a scrappy version, laying them out in Geesey formation will help you figure out which colors and combos you want to add.
For my super scrappy version, I made some high-contrast geese, such as the black geese with plummy backgrounds. These I’ve placed mostly where suggested for the Flight Pattern version. It’s not obvious, but does subtly emphasize the diverse directionality of the flying geese blocks.
Don’t be surprised if some of your scrappy geese don’t seem to belong anywhere. I’d rather be totally happy with my quilt top then use all of the geese I made on the quilt front. Here is a string of leftover flying geese blocks that I hope to work into the quilt back.
Now I’m choosing fabrics to fill in the blank spaces in my quilt top with a few more strings of geese. With all the blocks arranged in formation, it’s much easier to figure out which colors would best balance my scrappy work.
