Economy Star Parade: Sew Star Points
This post is part of the Economy Block Parade Sew-Along! See all posts.
Over the course of four weeks, I’ll be cutting and sewing an Economy Star Parade quilt along with you. At this pace, you’ll have a finished quilt top by the end of June.
Are you sewing-along? Please share your progress pictures, wherever you are in the process, on Instagram with #EconomyStar. It really sustains momentum and spurs new ideas to see everyone else in the process. We can learn from each other, inspire each other and just generally have a good time!
It’s time for the Week 2 assignment!
Week 2: Sew Star Points
This week our goal is to sew 24 more economy blocks for our 72” square throw-size quilt. Week 1 was all about those star centers. With Week 2 you’ll sew the star points, which surround the star blocks to create stars. It’s an exciting step!
Not sure what I mean? Navigate to page 9 in your copy of the Economy Star Parade pattern, where you’l find the Quilt Map Key. Here you can see how the Star Parade is formed using different kinds of economy blocks. The Star Point blocks are those economy blocks that use a mix of star fabrics and other fabrics for layer three. There are four kinds (lower, upper, right and left) illustrated in the Quilt Map Key.
My Star Point blocks in progress above are all “lower” blocks. If you’re sewing with directional fabrics, like those cats or the soda bottles, and want to keep all the fabrics oriented in the same direction, it helps to sew star points in batches of the same type. When sewing a batch of lower points, you can remember that the star fabric always belongs down, for example. It’s surprisingly easy to get turned-around, otherwise!
After you complete this week’s goal, you’ll have sewn all blocks that utilize your star fabric(s). If you’re blessed with a design wall, you might like to arrange your stare parade like so. It’s nice to see how far we’ve come already!
Of course the stars look a bit funny like this, with so many gaps. I wouldn’t be surprised if you have a few regular economy blocks already finished that you can start popping into those empty slots. You only need 4 regulars to complete your first star picture with a 3 x 3 grid of economy blocks. Satisfying!
