Wedge Cross, a scrappy sparkle
This week I got to sew another installment in my growing Pas de Deux collection. Starting with - - -
a little scrap magic, of course!
I hardly ever sew with purple, and thus don’t have a bunch of purple scraps, but it’s nice how far scraps go when you actually use them. Doesn’t take a lot to make a patchwork ensemble like this - just (20) 5” squares in purple did the job. I cut more than one square from my bigger scraps and didn’t resist the solids. In fact, mixing solids and prints in a scrappy project works really well. The solids give the prints room to breath!
This ensemble is called Wedge Cross and it is the first of two Pas de Deux groups that use foundation paper piecing. This is about as basic as it gets with foundation paper piecing - just three pieces of fabric per block. The block is actually so straightforward that it could be traditionally pieced, but foundation paper piecing is nicer so that you don’t have to cut the specially-angled shaped and sew-to-perfection.

No fuss, no muss. These blocks were a snap. Wedge Cross is the easiest group I’ve sewn so far for Pas de Deux!
Foundation paper piecing makes a group of nicely-aligned, sharp points. And that’s how we like it! If you’re new to foundation piecing, never worry. Pas de Deux will include step by step directions breaking down this technique. I promise, this is an ideal block with which to learn.
You’ll notice that I did two different color stories for Wedge Cross, which is a group that shows up in two separate parts of the quilt. That’s advantageous if working with a scrap color that you don’t have in abundance, as I did here with purple. Can you find both Wedge Cross sections on the Pas de Deux quilt mock up? It’s actually the very first group I sketched when I designed this quilt.
