Thinking about sewing clothes for the very first time? Start with sewing a skirt. It’s a quick, easy project, but still presents the opportunity to learn basic garment skills like elastic, gathering and hemming. I’m lucky to have a little girl for which to sew. Yesterday I made her a new skirt!

I’m sewing with a butterfly fabric called Lepidoptera Prism from The Confident Stitch. This is a coordinating quilting cotton fabric from Free Spirit’s Chrysalis collection, along with the Flight Prism fabric I used earlier this spring for Elora’s blouse.

I like the Paris Skirt free tutorial at Nothing Too Fancy. It’s based on measurements, so you don’t need any pattern print outs. You measure the waist and the desired length and that’s it! The skirt has a flat front waist, with elastic at the back for an easy, zipper-free fit.

I made the Paris skirt for the first time a few years ago, for toddler Elora. Oh, how time flies! Trust me, you are going to want to see those sweet pictures.

Are you back? One tip if you’ll be making this skirt - do expect to need a longer elastic than the tutorial recommends.

Easy peasy skirt success! Well, I really knew it was a success when she declared she must show her friends her skirt at school tomorrow! Yay.

The Lepidoptera Prism fabrics is super bright and colorful, which delights her little soul and should make it easy to keep looking clean and fresh. I hope she’ll wear it a lot this year and next year too, since I finished it with length to grow.
