Kismet Patchwork Curtains
Last week’s splendid pile of Kismet fabrics has been transformed into boho style patchwork curtains. I couldn’t be happier with the way it pulls the two ends of our living room/dining room space together. The room feels at once more harmonious. It’s amazing how much curtains can really enrich a space!
I was a little wary to include the black fabric in the mix, but decided to go ahead. I think the splash of black is a nice counter to the sweet pinks and creams. I especially love that this fabric collection combines flowers and interesting geometric prints. It’s a great vibe all together!
In the past I’ve made patchwork curtains with voile fabric and with FreeSpirit quilting cottons. I’ve sewn this time with Art Gallery Fabrics quilting cotton. I’m glad to report that these worked very well. They have a drape and translucence similar to the voile, creating an overall lighter effect than the FreeSpirit curtains. I would sew such curtains with Art Gallery Fabrics again.
I only noticed after taking photographs that I hung the left curtain upside down. Haha! It’s funny because I took care to keep the one directional floral print right side up when I was sewing the curtain panel patches. Then, at the very end of the project, I overlooked directionality and attached the ribbon hanging tabs to the wrong end while merrily listening to an audio book. You know how it goes!
Oh well, I really am laughing. I don’t mind enough to redo them. It’ll be mostly a secret between you and me, I think.
And here are the curtains closed, should you like to see that too. We actually rarely close these curtains, as they face our little back yard. Only at certain times of the year when the setting sun strikes the faces of those sitting at the table, do we actually close them. Well, good - they do work!
Now that I’ve finished the curtains, I’m already thinking of next steps for this room. Making one change can be so inspiring - - - and also make other things stand out like a sore thumb. For example, my rainbow-ish patchwork chair seats don’t really go any more. I’d also like to make a Kismet quilt for the sofa, repaint our aqua TV stand and probably even replace some sewn artwork that’s blue/aqua/green. That is quite a list, actually. I’ll give myself time.
Meanwhile, if you woud also like to make patchwork curtains - which I HIGHLY recommend - stay tuned for a tutorial post on Wednesday!
