Honeycombs, a new start

Time to take action! I have been mulling over ideas for this wall quilt long enough. I just have to start cutting and figure this out with fabric. I will be sewing a Honeycomb Stars quilt for my new living room!

For starters, I am using our future wallpaper as palette inspiration. This wallpaper will go on a wall that you see as you enter the living room. I would like the living room wall quilt to coordinate with the wallpaper, though it doesn’t have to use all of the colors.

My fabric dance began with a warm background of Art Gallery Cinnamon, Blossoming and Marvelous. Over top I piled possible fabrics for the hexagons.

Our main living room colors are blue, burgundy and mauve. I like the addition of cool purple and soft aqua green, as they are also present in the wallpaper. However, I wonder if this warm, pinky background is right?

I like this better! Now I have used a range of blues for the background. The living room wall is an even darker blue, which I imagine will look lovely.

When I attempted to translate the fabric ideas to PreQuilt, the effect was not reassuring. I don’t love how this mock up looks. I could be heading in the wrong direction, but it feels best at this point to forge ahead and figure it out in real life.

After so much planning, it is fantastic to actually cut into cloth! I am using a Tales of Cloth acrylic cutting template which was designed for my Honeycomb Stars pattern when I lead the sew-along in 2021. I will ask Jodi if she would like to make these available for purchase again. It is so nice to cut with a real ruler when working with a funny shape, such as a hexagon.

I do adore this batch of hexagons! That gives me courage.

Here I have arranged my hexagons over the blues, and the fabrics are singing to me! I am sure I will tweak some things (maybe less red), but this feels like the right direction after all. Good thing I did not allow the lackluster digital mockup to discourage. Yay!
