Let’s get Geesey!
Ready to sew a fabulous flying geese quilt? This project welcomes all quilt-makers from beginner to advanced. With two main versions included in the quilt pattern, plus ideas for scrappy iterations via the sew-along, this is one versatile quilt. It's the Geesey Geesey Sew-Along, co-hosted by Lucy Brennan of Charm About You and Rachel Hauser of Stitched in Color.
Over 2 weeks of prep and 5 weeks of stitching, starting mid October, we'll create the Geesey quilt. It makes a comfortable throw quilt, measuring 60” x 69”.
New to sewing flying geese? Never fear. The quilt pattern includes a cutting template that yields triangles with blunt points. These blunt points, combined with photos and detailed instructions, smooth the way to a successful block. I think you’ll love sewing no-trim flying geese.

the Quilt
I made my first Geesey quilt a few years ago when I fell in love with the Indie Folk fabric collection by Pat Bravo. This dynamic flying geese quilt is a fun way to showcase any fabric collection. That’s why Palette is the first version included in the Geesey quilt pattern. It’s ideal for collection-based sewing.
I received several requests to create a pattern for this quilt, and many of you have fallen in love with the Indie Folk fabrics too. The right moment came late this summer, when I decided to make another myself! You can buy fabrics to recreate my Indie Folk Geesey quilt at Sojo Fabric. Preorder the quilt kit, with or without backing fabric. The kits should be shipping soon, so that you can receive them before we start cutting at the end of October.
My latest Geesey quilt top will be finished soon. This time I’m sewing with Maple Farm Tilda fabrics (quilt kit also available - to arrive sometime early November, a tad late for the SAL). This quilt represents the Flight Pattern version of the Geesey quilt, which relies on use of value and contrast to create a more nuanced sense of movement.
And guess what? I’m planning to make yet another iteration of Geesey quilt during the sew-along. A scrappy version! It’s just so easy and fun to sew this flying geese quilt!
the Supplies
The Geesey quilt pattern includes 2 quilt versions: Palette and Flight Pattern. You can make either version during the sew-along. The versions have distinctly different fabric needs, so please consult your copy of the pattern for detailed fabric requirements.
For a scrappy Geesey quilt, you may want to supplement with some solids. Consider waiting until October 12th to do any shopping , as I’ll be discussing a few approaches for going scrappy. We don't start really sewing until October 26th, so you’ll have some time to shop for additional fabrics.
General Fabrics
Backing: 4 yards, 44” wide fabric
Binding: 1/2 yard
Optional Extra
The Fons & Porter flying geese ruler! Template shapes are included with the pattern. This ruler is an alternative way to cut your pieces - a nice upgrade and good investment if you enjoy sewing flying geese blocks.
