Teeter Totter!

I adore quilts with sharp, exciting angles. The energy of triangles can be cathartic or playful in a way that squares just are not. But I have to admit that sewing with angles usually takes some finesse. Teeter Totter is special that way. This triangle quilt is ideal for beginners! Thanks to a user-friendly and efficient construction process (see it in action!), each and every triangle point will remain sharp on your Teeter Totter quilt. It sews together fast and without the fuss-factor you’d expect from triangles. I really think you’re going to want to make more than one!

Do you love sewing scrap quilts? Me too! But triangle-shaped scraps had up to this point felt like more work than fun. The Teeter Totter patchwork style overcame my triangle-scrap bias in a big way. Because right angle scrap triangles of misc. sizes can be used and without pre-trimming, the process is efficient and joyful. In fact, through this quilt those triangles have earned the perceived value of all my other scrap categories. And that is a big step up indeed!

Teeter Totter is a scrap and precut-friendly pattern. To save time, you can use 1 1/2” wide precut fabric rolls for all the sashing! The triangles are ideal for scraps, but you can also sew them from charm squares, fat quarters or fat eighths.

Shown right is a mock-up of the baby-sized Teeter Totter. This version explores a two-color scheme. Rhythmic fabric placement creates a crisp, modern effect.

Your Teeter Totter quilt can be sewn with a consistent background fabric, as with my latest quilt. This emphasizes the triangles. Alternatively, make the background fabric the star of the show by creating an ombré blend! As part of my Color Mentor series, the Teeter Totter pattern encourages you to broaden your horizons with an ombré colored background. This creates a strong theme, which is especially handy for a scrap quilt.

I’ve dubbed this design Teeter Totter for the oscillating rotation of the triangles. That movement, combined with the occasional pieced triangles, feels so playful to me. During our May sew-along I’ll be sewing a new version with am ombré background and in a more limited color scheme. Using fewer colors might make the quilt calmer, but I don’t know - those see-sawing triangles always make me smile.

I can’t wait to start on my next Teeter Totter quilt. But wait I must, because if I start it now I’ll be finished before our sew-along even starts, hehe.
