this Fair Home, a Crossroads quilt
Hello and Happy New Year! I am away for a few days, welcoming the new year in a small Belgian city. Of course, I brought along a quilt (or two) to photograph, and today I am excited to share the first with you.
When I spotted this house during one of our first strolls through Huy, I wanted it instantly for my photographs. The wood facade is A.Maze.Ing. as I am sure you agree. Floris is a tall man, so you can see that the house has everything - texture, scale and generous lighting. Here we go - - -
The house sits on a busy street in Huy, a town in the French-speaking section of Belgium. Huy has a river, an elegant old church, a cozy teahouse and quaint boutiques. It nicely fits the bill for the quiet getaway we had in mind.
And for my photo ops, for sure!
Ta da! Here is my finished Crossroads quilt in Our Fair Home fabrics and other misc. Anna Maria Horner prints from my scrap drawers. The quilt is crazy-happy-vibrant, with each block reading like a wrapped-up gift.
Crossroads was a relaxing sew and at the same time a visually stimulating project. My favorite feature to the finished quilt are the smattering of white crosses. They punctuate the wild florals and spicy plaids so nicely.
For the quilting I chose tried-and-true Baptist Fan quilting. The project definitely needed something simple to counterbalance the playful prints. Plus, the quilted curves soften the tidy, boxed-in personality of the patchwork itself.
For quieter days, the quilt back will suffice. This is the 108” wideback print which Anna Maria Horner released with her Our Fair Home collection. It’s called Peony Heather. I just adore everything about it. The size of the flowers is glorious on a quilt back and the lavender background combines surprisingly well with the pink and golden floral elements. I’m so glad that I have some backing yardage leftover so that I can use it again for another quilt.
So, that’s a wrap! This was a fun quilt with which to finish off a rather good year and float on into the next. Don’t be surprised if I sew another Crossroads someday, but then completely from scraps. I like those small stripes for using up narrow string scraps.
This Fair Home Crossroads quilt is listed today in my Handmades Shop. May it bring joy to someone’s fair home this year.
p.s. You can buy Our Fair Home and the Ruby red solid that I’ve used for most of my center squares both at Sojo Fabric. Happy sewing, xoxo
