Dear Roy, a color wheel quilt
Red-orange-yellow-green-indigo-violet or ROYGIV, that’s the rainbow and she never gets old. I have recreated my Dear Dottie quilt as Dear Roy. He is a square-format color wheel quilt made up of delightful, scrappy polka dots. And I love him, love him, love him!
I just know that you are going to want to sew this scrap quilt too. I mean, Dear Dottie is one of my most popular patterns and when you add rainbow to that it’s downright irresistible. Good news - I am writing a Dear Roy pattern! It’ll be ready on Wednesday. If you don’t already own Dear Dottie and want to sew Roy, then this is the pattern for you. If you already own Dottie and want the Roy pattern as well, I’ll have a discount for that!
I wonder what you see when you look at Dear Roy from a distance? Do you see the bigger wheel of color or just a dot grid? I wanted to create a circular feeling, so I placed low volume dots at center and at the four corners. The idea was to use value to imply a color wheel, even though the dots are arranged as a straightforward grid. For me it works, but that could be because I designed it this way - - - Hm?
The low volume bits were at least an invitation to use some of my washed out scraps. I like the effect! I am also pleased with the low volume, leafy binding fabric, which fades into the edges of the quilt top.
The quilt backing presents a rainbow of lovely prints by my favorite designer, Anna Maria Horner. It’s saturated and willy-nilly, which is a nice contrast to the controlled quilt front.
Dear Roy was a visual treat and relaxing project to sew from start to finish. Elora even helped me a bit with the pressing. Fun memories for us both! I have listed this 65” square throw quilt in my Handmades Shop today. Here’s spreading the joy of patchwork rainbows!
