new pattern release - Dear Roy
Happy Wednesday! It’s pattern release day. I’m super excited to present my newest pattern - - -
Dear Roy!
Gather those scraps! Your very own dottie color wheel is waiting to be born!
Feeling intimidated? I hope to set your mind at ease. This quilt is great for a total beginner when it comes to sewing curves. My circle block is designed with two built-in trimming stages. You don’t have to sew the perfect curve to make nice, round circles. We trim to get there instead! Dear Roy is made with the drunkard’s path block, which is the most basic and simple form of curved patchwork piecing. You can totally do this!
As you can see Dear Roy is a very scrap-friendly quilt. But if you’re short on scraps, you can also use fat quarters or even 10” squares (layer cakes). In fact the pattern shows how to cut the quarter circles very efficiently from 10” squares. The only yardage required is 3 yards of background fabric.
If I were to make Dear Roy again, I would probably go for a dark background color, such as the Tilda Peacock which I have mocked up here. I love Dear Roy on white, but I am curious to see it with a dark background too.
Another idea is to use low volume fabrics for the background. If you go that route than you could use whatever misc. low volumes that you already have on hand, plus low volume scraps, thus avoiding buying background fabric at all.
COLOR CAREFUL - HELPING YOU EXPLORE COLOR
Dear Roy is part of my Color Mentor series. That’s because a cloth color wheel is an excellent primer for the color-careful quilter. Selecting fabrics and finding their place in the wheel is a slow, meditative process that invites you to compare, consider and explore. This Level 1 Color Mentor pattern is an excellent place to develop your relationship with color.
Enjoy sewing Dear roy!
Dear Dottie has been one of my most-sewn patterns, and I think Dear Roy has a good chance of matching her. What’s not to love about rainbows + polka dots? It’s a feel-good quilt that’s also super scrap friendly. Have fun!
