the Quilt
This pattern developed once upon a time out of that New Year clean-and-tidy energy. I totally believe in sewing my scraps, not only because it’s economical, but also because it brings me so much joy. It’s just amazing what you can make from a pile of cast offs, even when they’re not all favorite fabrics. String scraps are the long, thin scraps that proliferate particularly rapidly. This entire quilt is made up of such scraps - no background fabric yardage required. Whether you have loads of scraps or a modest basket full, sewing a Scrap Cabin quilt is a fabulous way to kick off your quilty new year!
Throw size: 66” x 66” or Baby size: 30” x 30”

Got THIN Scraps? This pattern will eat them up! The border uses a load of 1.5” wide string scraps to brilliant effect. After sewing the easy-peasy log cabin blocks, you’ll really make a dent in those thin, string scraps when you sew the lacy, peaks and valleys border. Yay!
the Supplies
Scrap Cabin is a scrap quilt, which makes the supplies list less relevant. If you have a generous scrap collection, you can sew a throw quilt made up of just 2 main colors, like my original blue and purple Crocus quilt. Maybe, like I did, you’ll target a scrap color that is outgrowing its scrap bin! If you are a little scrap poor, go for the more colorful version of Scrap Cabin! That’s what I’m sewing this time too. With this version, each Scrap Cabin Cluster features two contrasting colors and you don’t have to have a lot of scraps in any one color.
Here are some pointers for the fabrics. Full details are included in the pattern.
Fabrics for Throw Size
Blocks: equal amount of light and dark value scraps
Borders: 1.5” strips, at least 14” long, in light and dark values
Binding: 1/2 yard
Backing: 4 yards
