Scrappy Summer Vibes

Let’s pick back up on that quarter log cabin project, which I started earlier this month. I had finished this block and discovered that I wanted to make the next one with more stripes in each log cabin “log.”

Here are my colors for the second block. I plan to sew red stripes with olive green accents and mustard stripes with peachy pink accents. I’ll also use the white stripes to punctuate each log.

Getting started is always tricky because it’s hard for me to see how to orient the stripes in the beginning. Once I get started, the logs build upon each other quite logically. I have decided not to make the logs a regular width, because I like to use my scraps without excessive trimming. When the width of the scraps sets the width of each log, a pleasant variation arises and the fabric is used most efficiently.

My second block goes up on the design wall diagonal from the first. I wasn’t sure what sort of color scheme I wanted for this project, but as soon as I see the first two blocks together I know that I want to mix things up. Scraps in blues and greens, as well as brighter warm shades, go up on the design wall. I am digging this happy-go-lucky vibe!

My next block turns out to be my favorite. It has such a deliciously summer mood with that sunflower yellow and fresh aqua paired with plum. I have experimented with using gray as an accent strip in place of the white. I like the variation and I like using my gray scraps too, now that my white scraps are used up.

Here they are in all their glory - my quarter Log Cabin blocks with triple logs.

Hoorah! I love it!!

Only, I am not 100% sure what I want to do next. I don’t think I want to make sixteen blocks in this style. Instead, a more playful scrap quilt is brewing. Something with smaller blocks surrounding this quartet, treating it like a medallion center? We shall see. But first, switching gears to another project. This one will keep well for a few weeks. Its happy-scrappy summer vibes are sure to pull me right back in come June.
