in the Quilting Studio, no. 13

As we come to the end of September, I’m marking my first month in the quilting studio of our new, permanent home. It feels so wonderful to settle in and really arrive. My long arm quilting machine has taken a long journey. She’s happy to be humming over quilts again this September. Here are a few lovely projects that I had the pleasure of quilting.

Feather Bed by Svea Polster

Svea Polster @Svea.Polster used Anna Maria Horner’s Feather Bed pattern to create this whimsical quilt.

Isn’t it interesting how even with such bright, colorful scraps, the quilt has a calm, earthy vibe? Maybe it’s the way those feathers are floating, as if tossed by the wind.

To thoroughly reinforce the Essex linen/cotton background I suggested the Pine Needles pattern, which has the quilting density needed. I think the all-over texture suits the quilt’s style nicely!

EPP Stars by Jules

I was thrilled when this quilt arrived, created by Jules @JMiller4711. What a cheerful collection of English paper pieced stars!

With so much hand sewing at stake, Jules wanted to make sure that this quilt would hold up well to being used and washed. We chose to quilt the Orange Peel all-over quilting pattern, which gives a durable, even quilting texture. It’s a classic quilting motif for a classic quilt.

And yet, in these fun-loving colors, this quilt feels modern too. I’m glad to say that Jules is “absolutely happy” with the way it turned out.

Moda Blockheads 2 by Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic

Have you already seen this project at the Zen Chic blog? It’s a sampler quilt I custom-quilted for Brigitte Heitland.

I used complimentary quilting motifs to highlight certain blocks and filled in the rest with a background texture. The combination is really effective at “taming” a sampler quilt so that there are moments for the eyes to rest. Last week I longarm quilted another sampler quilt in this style. Highly recommended!
