in the Quilting Studio, no. 19

Hasn’t June just flown by? I’ve had the pleasure of quilting for creative folks who live as close as a ten minute bike ride and as far as southern France. I’ll show you a few of those lovely quilts here.

It’s been a nice, busy quilting season, but all that is winding down now as the warm weather arrives at last to northern Europe.

Over the summer, I’ll still be here, very happy to quilt for you! Maybe it’s time to tackle those old works-in-progress? Probably you will be home more than normal this summer, but your quilt tops can still go on vacation to my studio (wink). Then you’ll be ready to start a bunch of new projects with the cool weather returns this fall!

Elephant Abstractions by Jeannette

I was super excited when a quilter who lives in Enschede discovered my quilting services! She brought her lovely quilt top over by bike and picked up the finished project that way too. Very cool.

Hooray! This gorgeous piece is a Violet Craft pattern called Elephant Abstraction*. it’s a large-scale paper piecing pattern. If you like the style, Violet Craft has more animal abstraction patterns here at Fat Quarter Shop*.

Jeannette preferred all-over quilting with a more open style. I added a new edge-to-edge quilting motif called Jungle to my offerings for her project. It has enough character for the piece, but doesn’t take center stage. We’re both happy with the result!

Triangle Log Cabin by Heike Räsch-Mimler.

Take a moment to really look at this amazing patchwork design.

Have you ever seen anything like this? I hadn’t! It’s a concept that Heike (@heirami_) came up with when experimenting with a triangle log cabin. Wow! I expect it is paper pieced, to create such a precise outcome. So impressive!

My quilting is really nothing compared to the beauty of the patchwork. Heike suggested Baptist fan, which does indeed suit it beautifully. Really, Baptist fan is one of those patterns that goes well with many many quilts. It also provides even quilting coverage, without getting too dense in any one spot. That’s great for a quilt like this that has so many pieces, which need reinforcing for longevity. Here it is thoroughly-quilted, without getting stiff at all.

Vintage Squares by Svea Polster

Here’s something totally different. Svea Polster @Svea.Polster made this quilt using vintage fabrics and natural linen.

It’s a reminder that simple squares really do make some of the most charming quilts! When I spread it on my bed for a photograph, I thought it looked mighty fetching - quite perfect for summer too.

A natural-shapes quilting design is really nice with simple squares patchwork. The curves and irregular shapes soften the rigidity of the checkerboard layout. This new Daisy all-over quilting design has the right personality for vintage fabrics, don’t you think? It’s replacing an old Daisy pattern I used to offer. I’m always trying to improve my curated collection of quilting design options.

Mini Gravity Quilt by Sabine Lessing

Have you heard of the Gravity quilt by Jaybird*? It’s a block-of-the-month that can also be purchased in booklet form, to make a queen-size quilt.

Sabine has made the large version, but she also created a fantastic miniature version that’s just 32” square. Sabine made the pattern adjustments from the large size to this small size quite impressively.

You can imagine what fun it is to come up with a custom quilting plan for a quilt like this! Being that it is so small, we didn’t want to overdo it. On the other hand, it will be a wall-hanging, so dense quilting is no problem.

I feel like this struck a happy medium. The hardest part to execute was actually the echoing straight lines in the background area. Thank goodness I was doing them on a small scale!

I so enjoy offering Longarm Quilting services and definitely feel lucky that I somehow found my way to this work. Thanks to all of you, in the states and in Europe, who have entrusted me with your quilts. Now that I live in the Netherlands, I only offer quilting for residents of the European Union. If you live hereabouts, do be in touch! I’d love to help you finish your project with a lovely background texture or modern custom quilting.
