Reindeer Stella dress

Happy Holidays! It seems that every year I sew something festive, whether gifts, kids clothes or decor for our home. It’s always a treat to sew with holiday fabrics. And, as you can see, something this Christmas-y puts everyone in a joyful mood!

I bought this fabric April of 2020 because I couldn’t pass up the charming illustration combined with this deliciously saturated green, even if it was then springtime. I think that’s the best way to go - buy fabric when you fall in love. It’ll so much more fun that way! Though next time I’ll buy more than a yard. I baaaaarely had enough to squeeze out this dress.

The only downside is that this is a quilting cotton. (I regret that I don’t know the designer or manufacturer). At this point I avoid quilting cottons for sewing clothing because the finished garment doesn’t look as polished. Still, a dress for Rora was the natural choice. For sure she will enjoy wearing it, regardless of fabric substrate.

I chose to make another Ikatee dress, this time the Stella pattern in size 5. It has ruffles that extend down into the skirt area and options for sleeveless or long sleeves. Obviously, long sleeves suit the season here.

The dress has one-button closure, as per the pattern, though I did simplify by removing the bias neck binding. Instead, I made the bodice full lined, using methods I’ve learned from sewing the Geranium dress so many times. The lining provided for finished neck and back openings without bias binding.

In fact, the whole dress is lined! I had just enough of this soft double gauze leftover from years ago. It’s been quite cold in The Netherlands already this year. Layers are a must. And tights. And boots! At least when you’re not just taking photos inside for mama.
