in the Quilting Studio, no. 28

While I’m away from the studio, it’s the perfect time to reflect on some of the quilts I’ve especially enjoyed longarm quilting in recent months. Today’s round up includes a very summery fun quilt, a special custom-quilted mini and a few quilts with new-to-me quilting designs for all-over quilting. I hope you enjoy the show! Never hesitate to be in touch if you’d like me to quilt for you. I can help quilters located most anywhere in Europe!

Surfer Girl quilt by Sabine Hofferer

Not so far from me now, on an island off the coast of France, Sabine is a relatively new quilter with a fantastic style. She made this Surfer Girl quilt for her ocean-loving daughter. The patchwork that Sabine chose really shows off the Heather Ross Malibu fabrics so well, don’t you think?

As soon as I saw this quilt, I wanted to quilt it with Curls Allover. This is a special all-over quilting pattern that has no repeats. As a result, it looks beautifully organic and just happens to mimic waves. Watching it quilt out is mesmerizing.

To keep the quilt soft and cozy, I scaled the quilting way up. The result is a lot of dimension and so. much. movement.

What a lovely creation, front and back! I’m proud that that quilt did stay soft. Yay! For more shots of Sabine’s Surfer Girl quilt and loads of other inspiring quilts, check her out on Instagram.

Happiness 2.0 by Primrose Bohne

Here’s another special custom quilting project from Primrose. This is the Happiness 2.0 quilt pattern by Jacqueline de Jonge. It’s a highly technical quilt that Primrose probably pulled off without breaking a sweat. She’s got skills, my friends!

Developing a custom quilting plan was not so easy for this one. In fact, it took more time than usual. I’m glad Primrose encouraged me to keep looking and that together we took our time with it because the result really compliments the patchwork and fabrics so well. I especially love the medallion corners quilted in the nearly white area surrounding the circle. Together with the center circle motif, they make the quilt even more special than it already was.

You can really see the overall quilting style on the quilt back. That was a fun one!

Modern Tiles by Melanie Meyer

Ready for something bright and modern? Here’s a stylish finished quilt photo by maker Melanie Meyer. You can read more about her quilt and get the pattern too, on her blog.

I was kind of surprised when Melanie chose an edge-to-edge pattern for her quilt called Banana Swirls. Of course, at the time I had not yet seen her quilt, so I was left imagining a quilt that would connect with bananas. Haha! Then her quilt arrived and everything made sense.

Actually, Melanie has an excellent eye for quilting designs. She usually handpicks her quilting motif choice from the Urban Elementz website. More than once her choice has come in handy for other quilts. I’m not sure that Banana Swirl will suit so many quilts, but it definitely fits perfectly for this one.

I quilted Banana Swirls with open density, so the quilt would finish soft and drapey. The thread color is medium pink, to blend best with the saturated quilt top.

Quilty Stars by Melanie Meyer

One more to share! I often receive quilts in batches, since it saves customers on shipping costs. Melanie also sent me Quilty Stars!

Isn’t that a fun photo? Hope over to Melanie’s blog for more about the making.

Melanie chose the quilting pattern again, this time called Malachite. This is going to be a go-to pattern for sure. I’d like to see it quilted smaller scale next time, but it also looks good nice and big, as Melanie preferred.

I suggested a pale aqua thread, rather than white, to add a bit more interest over the negative space and blend gently on the stars.
