Windmills in progress
After even Elora identified this as a windmill block, I’m giving in and dubbing it my windmill quilt. I honestly did not notice the resemblance at first! Now I can’t imagine how I missed it, haha. My 5-year-old is growing into a real Dutch - she spies windmills everywhere.
In between other projects, I treat myself to sewing a block or two. Isn’t it fun when projects grow that way? A little here, a little there, with no need to rush. This block is actually called Posh Snowball, pattern and rulers by Sew Kind of Wonderful. The cutting and sewing processes require a fair amount of attention, so it keeps me nicely engaged.
You can find the special rules (Quick Curve Ruler and Mini Quick Curve Ruler) in Europe at Nanno Creative and in America at The Confident Stitch. The Posh Snowball pattern is also available printed at Nanno Creative and The Confident Stitch. For the digital version, visit Sew Kind of Wonderful.
I recently made a slight change. There was a point early on when I wanted to experiment with brighter colors for the windmills. I combined some of the brightest fabrics in my fabric pull and created the yellow text/blue plaid block at right.
The block in itself? Love it. Did it improve the quilt? Not so sure.
Later on, when my mom and I were catching up, she brought up the work-in-progress and started to describe a block that she felt just didn’t fit with the rest. You guessed it - the same one.
After our phone call I spent some time staring at my design wall. I was about to conclude that it really does compliment the other patchwork (in a funky sort of way), when I thought to try simply removing the block and measuring the effect. Wow. I immediately saw that I liked the quilt better without It!
Thanks, mom.
Now I’ve selected fabrics for the remaining blocks. There are only a handful left to sew! At the very end I’ll tackle the question of those little plush shapes. I’m looking forward to discovering what they will be.
Happy patchwork all!
