in the Quilting Studio, no. 34
Time sure is flying this spring! Between Pas de Deux and my longarm quilting services, you all are keeping me pleasantly busy, and for that I am grateful. Let’s catch up on some of the quilts I’ve had the opportunity to finish on my longarm quilting machine this year.
Do you plan to send a quilt my way soon? Keep in mind that I’ll be pausing my longarm services during my trip to the United States. To be sure to snag a spot prior to my trip, send your quilts this April or no later than the first week of May. I’ll be back and taking quilting orders again at the end of June.
Once quilt by Tanja
Earlier this year I quilted a lovely patchwork quilt for Tanja @ClosmannTanja. Her color scheme was inspired by @PiecestoPatch who made the same Once Quilt pattern in the same fabrics last year.
As you can see, it’s simply stunning, so no wonder Tanja was decided to sew the same color palette and fabrics again! The background fabric is Ruby Star Speckled in Bluebell. It’s a rich navy hue with specks of mid-blue and copper. I suggested quilting it with copper-colored thread. Copper is a mid-value color that shows nicely on both the dark background and white plus shapes.
As for the quilting - oh my gosh, was that a satisfying process! Tanja wanted open quilting that would allow her wool batting to remain fluffy and light. She had opted for all-over quilting, but I suggested an upgrade to custom quilting and showed her my idea for this Vintage Lily design centered on each block. We are both quite enthusiastic about the result! In real life, it is just as pet-able and cozy as it looks.
Aurora quilt by Jacomina
I’m a fan of this quilt patterned called Aurora. It comes from the book Quilts of Iceland and was created by Greta Peterson.
The sewing is rather straightforward, but the results would almost always be lovely. Jacomina has used a focal fabric at the top and bottom of her quilt, as well as twice through the middle. Her focal fabric set her color scheme and also inspired the bubble quilting you see here.
Bubbles were Jacomina’s idea, to which I happily agreed. It is often nice to contrast the quilting style with the patchwork style The Aurora patchwork is very linear, thus a rounded quilting pattern softens the whole look.
The Bubbles longarm quilting pattern is now added to my design catalog. I’ve already recommended it for several other quilts!
Starry Starry Night quilt by Stefanie Troy of Quiltwerke
My friend Steffi @Quiltwerke has recently released a new pattern: Starry Starry Night. Steffi’s patterns are available in English and in German, fyi. To my delight, she sent this rendition to me for longarm quilting service.
Steffi was hoping for a quilting pattern that would echo the sense of falling stars or highlight the change in star density. Although we both searched and searched, we couldn’t find an all-over quilting pattern that would quite deliver. However, the star quilting pattern that we ultimately did choose (which happens to be called Starlight!) imparts a beautiful modern texture.
It looks lovely from afar and close up too.
Bauhaus projects by Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic
Have you see the Bauhaus quilts? This quilt-along hosted by Brigitte @ZenChicModa is just wrapping up, but the pattern is still available in her shop.
I quilted Brigitte’s Bauhaus Quilt with Bubble Flow all-over quilting prior to the quilt-along. I haven’t yet come across her finished photographs of the quilt, but these close ups give you a feel for the texture of the quilting. Bauhaus quilt is made up of gigantic, graphic blocks, so we needed a modern quilting style for sure!
I believe that the Bauhaus pattern also includes instructions for a throw pillow, with the Bauhaus blocks shrunk down in scale. Brigitte and I love the U-turn quilting, which I did on her Bauhaus pillow top. Below is Brigitte’s photo off the fantastic finished pillow!
If you sewed along with the Bauhaus, I’d be happy to finish your projects with a modern quilting texture too. My services are available to those who live throughout the European region. Please be in touch if you have any questions or start the process off by placing your order. I can’t wait to see YOUR quilt!
