more than Words
A good friend is a treasure. Almost four years ago, when we were preparing to move to The Netherlands, I stitched love note bookmarks for my friends, as parting gifts. Each bookmark declared a descriptive word that captures something I particular value about my friend. It’s a simple little gift that takes just as much intention as time.
My Dutch friends have created an amazing support system for me, here in The Netherlands. These women have welcomed me, oriented me to a new culture, allowed me to share my real self, and taught me bucket loads of Dutch in conversation. There are truly no words to adequately express my gratitude.
But I figured I could try! I bought a new roll of paper fabric (also called faux leather or Kraft paper fabric) to make bookmarks for my closest local friends. If you would like to do the same, see my free Love Note Bookmarks tutorial.
The hardest part by far is choosing one word for each friend. It would be so much easier to express my appreciation in a torrent of words. Finding a single, powerful word is a challenge, especially in my second language. Words have more than translations; they have subtle connotations and use patterns which can make two words feel different even if they translate the same. Searching out those underlying Dutch connotations was an interesting and challenging aspect of selecting the best word.
Next comes the pretty part! After selecting a word and penciling it by hand on the paper fabric, I chose felt, ribbon and pearl cotton embroidery thread in colors that remind me of each friend.
The embroidery is a simple running stitch. Cursive text works best, as the unbroken lines are straightforward and efficient to embroider. No need to worry about the backside looking neat. It is hidden by the felt backing.

Puur - pure. All that you are and do comes straight from your heart, and it is pure.
Moedig - brave. You stand for what you believe and act accordingly.
Oprecht - honest, trustworthy and sincere.
Wijs - wise. You use intelligence, creativity and experience for the common good.
Aardig - pleasant, friendly and enjoyable.
Of course, they are such a pleasure to give! I am positive that I enjoyed reflecting on my friends’ good qualities and giving these little bookmarks as much as my friends enjoyed receiving them.
If you feel inspired to make something to show your friend(s) your love, I say emphatically, “Do it!” Unexpressed gratitude or admiration is such a terrible waste. You will both be happier for the effort.
