A Colorful Thread: October 2024

Weaving together my life as a maker and other spheres of life.

On My Mind

Experimenting:: with hanging wallpaper. On Sunday my friend Jose taught me how to hang wallpaper. It went so well! According to Jose we were lucky because our wallpaper was of good quality and the pattern was easy to match. But still - wahoo! I feel so empowered. I could put wallpaper everywhere! Wink. In fact, yesterday I papered the downstairs powder room with the leftover roll. Yay!

Reading:: Normal People by Sally Rooney. I wouldn’t have normally picked up this book, so I am glad that my book club chose it for November. The author is incredibly talented. She can say so much without saying it directly, just pulling you right into the scene. Recommended if you love a novel with multiple perspectives and interesting character development.

Sponsor of the Week

Winter Creek Cloth

No tricks, just treats! Treat yourself to yummy fat quarters for just $2.50 a pop at Winter Creek Cloth this week. Now through November 5th.

Celebrating:: When I was poking around for a relaxing scrap quilt idea this week, I did consider sewing another coin quilt. @Nonnie_Anne made this one using my Coin Quilt Recipe tutorial. Don’t you love it? This is super-efficient to sew with long, thin string scraps. I sense another one in my future!

Anticipating::  our cocktail party. This year instead of hosting Thanksgiving (in a country that doesn’t celebrate it, of course), I’m throwing a cocktail party/housewarming party for my adult friends at our new home. Luckily my boyfriend also loves throwing parties, so we’re enjoying planning all the details together for a swanky cocktail evening. We’ll get to know some of the other’s friends better and enjoy this chance to really dress up. My goodness, it is fun being an adult sometimes!

Continuous Eight Quilting Tutorial

Stitched in Color includes a library of free tutorials, more than 10 years in the making. Each month I’ll feature one to spread the good news.

Do you want to learn to free motion quilt? When I was quilting my tops on a home machine, one of my favorite quilting patterns was the continuous eight. It's relatively fast, secure and compliments most any flavor of quilt.  See this tutorial for tips and a video that might help you master the continuous figure eight.

Just one month left until our big move. In the meantime, I am still working and sewing, packing up house, moving small things over to the new place and reorganizing too. It’s been busy, busy, busy! By the new year even my business will be moved into its new digs, located outside of my home for the first time ever. Big changes coming around here! The kids and I are feeling the strain of so much transition. Here’s to the cozy fall season which offers many small comforts: tea, cuddly quilts, fireside and changing leaves. Moments to savor each day.

xoxo,

Rachel
