A Colorful Thread: September 2024

Weaving together my life as a maker and other spheres of life.

On My Mind

Experimenting:: with sewing a patchwork duvet cover. To quilt or not to quilt? To use batting or not to use batting? How far must you disassemble the purchased duvet cover to use as applique background? These questions are more are finding their way into answers this week. A finish coming soon!

Reading:: The Fountain: Find Your Place by Els van Steijn. This September I read this book with my bookclub. It came recommended by several who had found the author’s metaphor for the family system quite helpful. It is originally a Dutch book (and I read it in Dutch, yippee!), so I also enjoyed thinking about family from a new cultural perspective. In a nutshell, it is about understanding and accepting your place in the family system, so that all can thrive. Really thought-provoking. Time well spent!

Join the Red Sky at Night Quilt-Along! You’ll get weekly emails to walk you through the Red Sky at Night pattern, starting from the beginning, with links to how-to videos and blog posts to support your journey. Even though I am not sewing along, I have been enjoying the Red Sky emails, with their fascinating stories from quilt history. Jodi is a pleasure to read!

Celebrating:: How exciting - the first finished Positivities quilt! Those following the fast track version of Positivities block-of-the-month received the final installment this month. Today I spied this gorgeous finish from @Tifosew, already quilted and bound. What a gorgeous mix of color and fabric. Congratulations, Tif!!!

Anticipating::  sewing a quilt for my new living room wall. This weekend Aart and I painted our future living room and kitchen. Now that the color is up on the wall, I can really envision putting a quilt there. It is time to choose a design for that wall quilt and make it happen! I am a little nervous, as I have never planned from the start to make a quilt to hang prominently, but I am also really grateful for this invitation. Wish me luck!

Colorbrick: a Beginner’s Quilt

Stitched in Color includes a library of free tutorials, more than 10 years in the making. Each month I’ll feature one to spread the good news.

Are you ready to make your first quilt?  Nervous?  Don't know where to start?  Colorbrick is a quilt-along perfect for beginner quilters. It was my first quilt, my first quilt-along and loved by many. Check it out!

The painting has begun. The packing has begun. It looks like life is going to be messy from here on out. Everything should be settled in place by the new year. I have never moved before while having access to both homes over a long period of time. Moving gradually sounds good, but it is also challenging for a personality like mine.

For sure I am grateful to be making a new home with Aart, including repainting pretty much his whole house. In this photo the paint was still drying! That color is Hague Blue from Farrow and Ball, but mixed in my favorite Sikkens paint. I will show you all the colors in time, I promise!
